As one of our defined outputs, TECH SY has been building an action plan to scale up the tech ecosystem in South Yorkshire.
The plan has been co-developed by key stakeholders from South Yorkshire’s tech ecosystem convened by TECH SY. It aims to leverage public and private resources to build a thriving regional tech ecosystem.
Stakeholders worked together to articulate a positive, future-focused vision for South Yorkshire’s tech ecosystem and to agree six strategic goals that directly address the core problems identified. These goals translate the challenges into practical, achievable priorities for the next 3–5 years, while also laying the foundations for longer-term transformation.
The Action Plan on a Page brings together the key actions required to move the system forward. Some actions could be delivered directly by a small, central TECH SY team, acting as a coordinator, convener and advocate. Others would be led by ecosystem partners, including local authorities, universities, delivery organisations, investors and industry, aligned through shared governance and purpose.
This is not a shopping list or a menu of optional activities. It is a collective, system-wide approach, designed to build coherence, reduce duplication and focus effort where it will have the greatest impact. By strengthening foundations first: leadership, narrative, data, coordination and access, the ecosystem can unlock more sustainable growth, inclusion and national relevance over time.
Stakeholders were clear that no single organisation can resolve these issues in isolation. What is required is a shared vision, clearer roles, stronger coordination and long-term commitment across the whole system; aligning policy, investment, delivery organisations, industry and education around a common direction of travel.
This document serves to introduce the plan as a document for feedback. Behind this document sits a much more comprehensive, detailed version which sets out:
The opportunity that the tech ecosystem offers to the region in terms of wealth and prosperity
The challenges that need to be addressed to enable the ecosystem to thrive
A set of goals and pathfinder projects that will unlock economic opportunity
The stakeholders that are committed to coming together to mobilise this action plan
The resources that need to be deployed to make this happen
A future-proof governance framework to set the ecosystem up for success
Our Action Plan is now open for feedback.
