Idea Validation Support

TECH SY is reopening its Idea Validation Support, after strong demand saw the previous programme close early.

From 16 April, early‑stage tech founders and businesses in South Yorkshire can apply for provider‑led validation support worth £3,000. The support is designed to help founders test ideas properly – exploring market demand, feasibility and next steps – before making major time or financial commitments.

We are partnering with Trove again to deliver the idea validation support, benefiting from their experience as founders starting, scaling and exiting a tech business, and their knowledge of the investment landscape. They have adapted their 90-day iMVP programme to bring structure to this 121 support, with workshops and biweekly meetings.

This refreshed model is particularly suited to part‑time founders and side hustles, though full‑time founders at an early stage are also eligible. Places are limited, applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and the programme may close early once funds are allocated.

Idea Validation Support FAQs

What is the Idea Validation Support?

It’s a TECH SY programme offering provider‑led support worth £3,000 to help early‑stage tech founders validate their ideas. The focus is on testing market demand, feasibility and next steps before committing significant time or money.

Is this a grant or cash funding?

No. This round offers hands‑on validation support delivered by an expert provider, not a cash grant. The value of the support is worth £3,000 equivalent per founder or business.

Who is it for?

It’s aimed at early‑stage tech founders based in South Yorkshire, particularly part‑time founders or side hustles. Full‑time founders at an early validation stage may also be supported, with a lighter level of touchpoints than previous programmes.

What do you mean by “tech”?

Your business must have a technology‑based product or service as its primary activity – for example software, AI, digital platforms or data‑driven solutions.

How many founders will be supported?

The programme aims to support around 10–12 founders, depending on the level of support allocated to each project. We recommend you apply early as places are limited on this pilot programme.

When do applications open and close?

Applications open on 16 April and will close by 12 June at the latest, but may close earlier if funds are allocated. Applications will be reviewed from early May.

Can I apply if I received an Idea Validation Grant previously?

No. Applicants must not have received support through the original TECH SY Idea Validation Grants programme (either a cash grant or provider support).

What will the support actually help with?

Support may include market validation, customer discovery, feasibility testing, roadmap planning and structured sense‑checking of your idea with the experienced founders at Trove Ventures. The aim is to help you validate early – not scale prematurely.

Is this only for full‑time startups?

No. This round is intentionally designed to work around other commitments, making it well suited to founders building alongside employment, study or other responsibilities.

How do I apply?

You’ll need to complete an application outlining your idea, the problem you’re solving, your proposed solution and your readiness to engage with validation support. Applications are assessed on a rolling basis.
